Mr xue yongnian speaks highly of liu zhengxing’s live liquid-ink sketch
on the 7th june 2007, professor Xue Yongnian, a famous Chinese art historian, director of graduate department of China Central Academy of Fine Arts and doctore supervisor of
School of Humanities, came to liu zhengxing’s work office who is a well-known painter and the president of Chengdu Artists Association. After interestedly appreciating Liu Zhengxing’s fully expressive Chinese liquid-ink works, Professor Xue praised them highly, especially his live liquid-ink sketches, saying that “I particularly like your live liquid-ink works, which are vivid, colorful and solid desipte their few lines. Pointing at the 20-meter long scroll work Old Town of Huang Longxi, Professor Xue excitedly commented that, “artist huang binhong used to paint in this way, that is, live sketch with strucuture in it. It seems that you have learned huang binhong’s method.” He then added that, “live sketch is a good way for painting which surpasses the college teaching, and should be used as a teaching method. Nowadays many sketches are just collection of materials with no sense of generosity.” Before the sketches of a series of old towns, Mr. Xue Yongnian gladly said, “to paint architechture is not an easy task and to draw the architecture in liquid-ink method to this degree is even more difficult.” When looking through Liu Zhengxing’s painting book, Mr Xue had been praising his works like this, “vast mountains and seas with generous spectacles.” Speaking about liquid-ink paintings, Xue Yongnian said that, “integrity is a very important element for painting mountains and waters. Besides, the arrangement of the scenes is also an vital factor, since it is said that mountains are like waves, and vice versa.”
After that, Xue Yongnian lauded that Sichuan has nurtured many famous artists such as Su Shi, Zhang Daqian, Jiang Zhaohe, etc. Liu zhengxing, who has insisted on live liquid-ink skecthing for decades, has deep insights on the nature of the liquid-ink paintings. Mr. Xue’s absolute appraise of his achievement made through persistent pursuit and practices has strengthened his own faith. He expressed his apreciation for mr. Xue’s coming. In the end, Mr. Xue gave Liu Zhengxing some suggestions on the selection of painting materials.
